Ice Hawks Get a Shutout

La CROSSE, Wis. — Bailey Schmitz delivered something the Rochester Ice Hawks hadn’t seen all season: A shutout.

The first-year Ice Hawk stopped all 29 shots on Sunday afternoon to lift the Ice Hawks to a 2-0 North American 3 Hockey League victory against the La Crosse Freeze.

The Ice Hawks were outshot 29-18, but Schmitz was up to the task, and teammates Matthew Bembenek and Skylar Watt scored less than five minutes apart midway through the second period to give Schmitz all the goal support he’d need.

The Ice Hawks earned their first shutout of the season and improved to 6-25-1. They went 2-1-0 over the weekend, beating the Wisconsin Whalers on Friday before falling to La Crosse 3-1 on Saturday, then defeating the Freeze on the road Sunday.

Dylan Boysen, Colin Hass, Ethan Sievek and Austyn Renn had one assist each for Rochester.

The Ice Hawks play host to La Crosse on Friday (7:05 p.m.) and Saturday (8 p.m.) at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Saturday: La Crosse scored two second-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and top the Ice Hawks 3-1.

Schmitz stopped 27 shots in the loss for Rochester, which scored first, at 5:49 of the opening period. Charles Bill recorded the goal, with assists from Boysen and Colby DeCarlo.

Tyler Briley, Lucas Motloch and Hunter Dolan scored for La Crosse.
