Ice Hawks’ Hot Streak Continues

The Rochester Ice Hawks built an early lead, then scored three times in the third period to pull away for an 8-4 North American 3 Hockey League victory against the La Crosse Freeze on Saturday at the Rochester Recreation Center.

The Ice Hawks are now 3-2-0 in their past five games, all against Central Division opponents, after their biggest offensive output of the season.

Rochester (7-26-1 overall) got off to a fast start Saturday against the Freeze, building a 3-1 lead after one period.

La Crosse (14-17-2) rallied with three second-period goals to pull within 5-4.

Austyn Renn gave the Ice Hawks some breathing room early in the third. The Rochester Mayo graduate scored his eighth goal of the season 2:46 into the final period to give his team a 6-4 lead. Byron native Matthew Shupert and Charles Bill added empty-net goals in the final 1:03 to make the final score 8-4.

Bill scored twice in the game, while Colby DeCarlo, Spencer Hadacek, Andrew Gates and Ethan Sievek scored once each.

Hadacek had a big game for the Hawks, collecting four assists, for a five-point game. Bill had two assists, for a four-point night; and DeCarlo and Skylar Watt also had two assists. Renn, Sievek, Willie Meyer, Ryley Cook, Michael Smits and Joe Puglise had one assist each.

Drew Schenkenberg and Bailey Schmitz split time in goal for Rochester. Schenkenberg allowed four goals on 17 shots, while Schmitz played the final 27:42 and stopped all 12 shots he faced.

The Ice Hawks play host to the Granite City Lumberjacks at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
