Ice Hawks Suffer Loss

OREGON, Wis. — The Rochester Ice Hawks scored the first two goals, but the Wisconsin Whalers scored the next five.

Rochester tacked on one more late in the game, but couldn’t complete the rally, falling 5-3 to the Whalers in a North American 3 Hockey League game on Saturday.

Skylar Watt scored twice, six minutes apart in the first period for a 2-0 Ice Hawks lead after one period.

Wisconsin (19-23-5 overall) answered with two goals in the second period, then three more in the first 13:36 of the third period to pull away.

Charles Bill scored for Rochester with 5:48 to go to make it 5-3, but the Ice Hawks (10-36-1) couldn’t score again.

Bailey Schmitz made 42 saves in the loss.

The Ice Hawks play a best-of-3 first-round playoff series against Central Division champion North Iowa this coming weekend. Game 1 is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in Mason City. Game 2 is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Rochester, with Game 3 back at North Iowa, if needed.
