Saturday, October 7, 2016 Willmar Warhawks vs Ice Hawks 7:05 Rec. Center
Game 2 of the ‘Battle of the Hawks’ Willmar returns to the Rec. Center for their 2nd visit of the season. In the 1st game (Sept. 17th) the Warhawks came away with a 1-0 win. Head Coach Chris Blaisius has the Warhawks playing well as they return to Rochester. The Warhawks are in third place in the NA3HL’s West Division with a 2-1 record. The Warhawks have had several roster additions and look to be a stronger team than the one the Ice Hawks faced on 9/17.. interestingly, the Warhawks have yet to play a home game in Willmar: They will open their home season with games onOctober 14 & 15. Warhawks scoring leaders– #18 Jacob Dobberstein, 7 Dane Toriumi and 21 Riley Tigrett.
Ice Hawks Player News-
The Ice Hawks welcomed goalie Bailey Schmitz 6 ft 200 lb 1998 birth year who was obtained from Thief River Falls Norskies of the Superior International Hockey League. Bailey wears # 32. Bailey is a rookie who was a standout goalie at Lafayette HS in Northern Minnesota. He is living with the Volker family along with teammate Charlie Bill. Bailey saw his first action as an Ice Hawk in last Sunday’s game vs St. Louis.
The Hawks coaching staff and the Mayo Sports Medicine Hockey Performance staff have been impressed by the work ethic of this year’s team. This team is among the youngest and least experienced in Jr. Hockey. The coaching staff cites improvements from game to game and the squad is working hard. Many Injuries have hampered performance on the ice. The coaches look for continued improvement as the season progresses. Regardless of the score these kids play hard.
Injuries- Many Hawks players are banged up. Seven players were unable to participate in the Tuesdaypractice due to nagging injuries. Among the more serious injuries: Nick Wagner and Andrew Gates are out for this weekend. Dylan Boysen and Ethan Sievek are ‘day to day’ and may be available but Zach Curry is expected to be out for at least 2 weeks and Willie Meyer is out until late December.
Two Jr Hawks AAA Players called up due to injuries
The numerous injuries have resulted in two player call ups from the AAA Jr. Hawks team. The Jr. Hawks are a Rochester based summer development program directed by Coach Nick Fatis. Forwards, Trevor Timm and Daytin Zimmerman-Fatis got the opportunity to play for the Ice Hawks in last weekend’s games.
Timm wore # 16 and is a high school student in Wabasha, while Zimmerman-Fatis is at Mankato East H.S . Timm will be a development player for the Ice Hawks once his high school football season ends. Zimmerman-Fatis is the first 2000 birth year player to appear in a game for the Ice Hawks. The coaches were pleased by their perfomance and they look to be part of the future for the Ice Hawks. One other Jr. Hawks player, Duell Buck made his junior debut and played a’ split season’ with the Ice Hawks last year. The three youngsters are the first players from the 2 year old Jr. Hawks program to play at the the NA3HL Level.
