ALEXANDRIA — The Rochester Ice Hawks struggled all weekend, and the Alexandria Blizzard took advantage, sweeping the Ice Hawks in a two-game set.
On Saturday, the Blizzard scored three times in the opening period and rolled to a 7-4 victory at the Runestone Community Center.
Alexandria outshot the Ice Hawks 41-22. The Blizzard took advantage of Rochester penalties, scoring three power-play goals.
Kenny Ree gave the Ice Hawks a brief lead in the first period, scoring a power-play goal 2:51 into the game. Rochester natives Nick Paulson and Dylan Boysen had the assists.
The Blizzard scored three unanswered goals to close the period, and extended their lead to 4-1 with a tally 5:28 into the second.
Dominik Bogdzuil gave the Ice Hawks some hope heading into the third, scoring at the 15:21 mark. Andrew Gates and Griffen Buck had the assists.
But the Blizzard pulled away early in the third, scoring twice to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Ice Hawks did manage two late goals with Ian Smyth scoring on he power play and Vladislav Shipota scoring an unassisted tally at the 18:18 mark.
Kyle Plantz took the loss in net for the Ice Hawks. Plantz finished with 34 saves on 41 shots.
The Ice Hawks dropped to 5-12-0 in North American Tier 3 Hockey League play. They are now off until Dec. 4 when they play at the La Crosse Freeze.
