Junior hockey: Ice Hawks come up short against Stars

November 4th 2016

The Rochester Ice Hawks received another strong performance from goalie Bailey Schmitz, but couldn’t find enough offense against the Breezy Point North Stars in a 4-1 North American 3 Hockey League loss on Friday at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Schmitz kept the Hawks in the game, stopping 37 of the 40 shots he faced. The North Stars led just 1-0 through two periods, on a goal by Steven Kukla at 14:36 of the second period.

Wyatt Stotts made it 2-0 1:56 into the third, but Rochester’s Austyn Renn cut that deficit in half five minutes later with a short-handed goal assisted by Matthew Bembenek.

The North Stars (12-3-1 overall) responded immediately, though, as Tyler Larwood scored on the next shift for a 3-1 lead. Andrew Heckaman added an empty-net goal with 18 seconds remaining.

The Ice Hawks (1-13-0) play host to the La Crosse Freeze at 7:05 p.m. tonight, then play at La Crosse at noon on Sunday.
