Junior hockey: Ice Hawks hang tough against Bulls

October 28th, 2016

MASON CITY, Iowa — Drew Schenkenberg held the Rochester Ice Hawks in the game, but the North Iowa Bulls had just a little more offensive power on Friday.

The Ice Hawks held their own against one of the best teams in the North American 3 Hockey League, but fell 4-1.

After a scoreless first period, North Iowa (13-2-0 overall) scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period and added an even strength tally to take a 3-1 lead.

Connor Clemons, Steven Mordini and Logan Miller scored once each for the Bulls in the second, and Owen Larson tacked on one more goal in the third.

Matthew Bembenek scored the lone goal for the Ice Hawks, an unassisted tally at 17:36 of the second period. It pulled Rochester to within 3-1, but the Hawks couldn’t beat Bulls goalie RJ Pluhar (24 saves) again.

Schenkenberg made 30 saves for the Ice Hawks (1-10-0).

The teams will meet again tonight at the Rochester Recreation Center at 7:05 p.m.
