Junior hockey: Ice Hawks notch first ‘W’ of season in dramatic fashion

Post Bulletin October 14, 2016

BREEZY POINT — Ethan Sievek picked a perfect time to score his first goal of the season.

The young defenseman from Shakopee scored 2:07 into overtime to lift the Rochester Ice Hawks to their first victory of the North American 3 Hockey League season, 4-3, against the Breezy Point North Stars at the Breezy Point Hockey Center on Friday.

Sievek, just 17 years old, helped the Ice Hawks rally from a goal down for the second time in the game.

His goal also gave Ice Hawks goalie Sawyer Schmidt — who has been a bright spot so far this season for Rochester — his first victory in the NA3HL. Schmidt stopped 41 of the 44 shots he faced to earn the win.

Spencer Hadacek scored his first goal of the season for Rochester to tie the score 3-3 in the third period. Rochester Mayo grad Dylan Boysen scored twice in the first period, which ended with the score tied 2-2.

Michael Smits, Skylar Watt and Colby DeCarlo had two assists each, while Hadacek and Ian Smyth had one each.

The Ice Hawks and North Stars meet again at 7:05 p.m. tonight at the Rochester Recreation Center.
