Junior hockey: Ice Hawks rally to beat Whalers in OT

November 12, 2016

A night after falling in a shootout to the Wisconsin Whalers, the Rochester Ice Hawks received a big overtime goal from one of their captains to beat the Whalers and split a weekend series.

Dylan Boysen scored 2:23 into overtime Saturday night to lift the Ice Hawks to their second victory of the season, 4-3 against the Whalers in a North American 3 Hockey League game at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Rochester’s victory came on the heels of the Whalers’ 4-3 shootout victory against the Hawks on Friday.

The Ice Hawks (2-15-1) didn’t lead Saturday’s game until Boysen scored.

After a scoreless opening period, Wisconsin built a 2-1 lead in the second period on a pair of goals by Broddey Richards, with Rochester’s Skylar Watt scoring in between.

Ben Ratner extended the Whalers’ lead to 3-1 with a goal at 13:16 of the third, but the Ice Hawks battled back quickly. Colby Decarlo scored 65 seconds later to make it 3-2, then Watt scored again with exactly a minute to go in regulation to force OT and set up Boysen’s game winner.

Ethan Sievek and Boysen had two assists in the game. Decarlo had one, as did Michael Smits.

Drew Schenkenberg made 26 saves to earn the victory in goal for Rochester.

The Ice Hawks are idle until a Nov. 23 game at Alexandria. Their next home games are scheduled for Nov. 25 and 26 against the Chicago Bulldogs.
