Junior hockey: Ice Hawks run out of comebacks

Rochester Post Bulletin News Sunday – January 8, 2017

OREGON, Wis. — The Rochester Ice Hawks rallied from a goal down three times to tie the score, but they couldn’t manage a fourth comeback in a 5-3 North American 3 Hockey League loss to the Wisconsin Whalers on Saturday.

Charles Bill, Skylar Watt and Ethan Sievek all scored for the Ice Hawks, each time tying the score after the Whalers had gone up a goal.

But when Wisconsin’s Austin Lewis scored at 11:41 of the third period, it gave the Whalers the lead for good. Carter Grobstick tacked on an insurance goal three minutes later.

Lewis scored twice, while Ben Ratner and Jake Faulkner scored once each for the Whalers (10-14-4 overall).

Dylan Boysen, Matthew Bembenek and Joe Puglise had one assist each for the Ice Hawks (4-24-1), and Bailey Schmitz was solid in goal, making 40 saves.

Rochester plays host to the Whalers at 7:05 p.m. Friday, then the Ice Hawks play host to LaCrosse at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
