Junior hockey: Ice Hawks swept by Freeze

The Rochester Ice Hawks couldn’t hold La Crosse’s offense in check over the weekend and dropped a pair of North American 3 Hockey League games to the Freeze, 8-2 on Saturday at the Rochester Recreation Center and 8-7 on Sunday in La Crosse.

La Crosse put the game away early on Saturday, leading 4-0 after period and 7-1 after two.

Skylar Watt and Michael Smits both scored their first goals of the season for Rochester, while Dylan Boysen and Colin Hass each had an assist.

Drew Schenkenberg stopped 21 of 27 shots he faced for the Ice Hawks, and Bailey Schmitz finished the game in goal, making 24 saves on 26 shots.

In Sunday’s loss, Rochester held the lead on four occasions, but La Crosse responded on all four occasions.

The Ice Hawks scored four of the game’s first seven goals and held leads of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 during the first two periods. But the Freeze answered with two goals late in the second period for a 5-4 lead after two.

Rochester tied the score 7-7 midway through the third, but Lukas Motloch scored the game winner with 8:22 to go.

Schmitz made 29 saves in the loss.

Austyn Renn had a big game for the Hawks, with two goals and three assists. Zach Curry scored two goals, and Watt had a goal and an assist.

Hass and Spencer Hadacek also had one goal each for Rochester. Smits, Boysen, Matthew Bembenek and Colby DeCarlo had one assist apiece.

The Ice Hawks play host to the Wisconsin Whalers on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
