Junior hockey: Ice Hawks toppled by Granite City

The Rochester Ice Hawks notched their first goal of the season on Saturday, but couldn’t break into the win column in an 8-1 North American 3 Hockey League loss to the Granite City Lumberjacks at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Matthew Bembenek scored on a power play at 12:15 of the second period for the Ice Hawks, pulling them within 2-1 at the time. Sam Bjellum and Charles Bill assisted on the goal.

Granite City (3-0-0 overall) scored five minutes later to extend its lead to 3-1, then added five more in the third period.

Drew Schenkenberg started in goal for Rochester (0-4-0 overall) and made 44 saves on the 49 shots he faced. Tyler Thompson stopped six of nine shots over the final 9:45 of the game.

The Ice Hawks have a three-game homestand against St. Louis this weekend, with games at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Rec Center, and a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
