Justin Bowder
Equipment Manager / Assistant Coach

Justin has served with the Ice Hawks in a variety of capacities since 1999.  He is currently responsible for handling all equipment and preparing the players to participate in games. Justin has been in involved in hockey as long as he can remember. His family roots are in the hockey hotbed of Northern Minnesota’s Iron Range.  He was raised in Mankato, MN where he played in the Mankato Youth Hockey Association.   He and Coach Nick have been close friends for about 30 years and played together for a few seasons of youth hockey.  Away from the rink, Justin is a resident of Rochester.

Jeff Bolin RE

Assistant Coach

Jeff Bolin joins the Ice Hawks as an Assistant Coach with primary responsibility for working with the team’s goalies. Jeff has long been involved in coaching goalies at the youth and high school levels locally.  He started his hockey career at Edina West and at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.  He has trained goaltenders at the youth, high school and college levels for the past 16 years. Also, he currently serves as the ‘Director of Hockey’ for the Dodge County Youth Hockey association in Kasson, MN.   Jeff and his wife, Ann, have lived in Rochester, MN since 1996: they have two children, Matthew and Jessica.

Al Rooney
Assistant Coach

Al joins the Ice Hawks as an Assistant Coach/Consultant.  He was the Assistant Coach of the 2016-17 Robertson Cup Champion Lone Star Bahamas, and also previously served at the head coach of the NA3HL Junior Brahmas.  Al played professionally as a goalie.  He is no stranger to Minnesota having played here at the junior level and has previously coached in Winona.  Al and his family moved to Rochester to take the Associate Head Coach position with the Austin Bruins;  He will also be available for the early morning  Ice Hawks weekday practices.

Brett Gates
Assistant Coach Strength & Conditioning

Brett is a former Ice Hawk player (2012-13). He rejoins the Hawks as an Assistant Coach/Strength & Conditioning.  Brett attended Saint John’s University and graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor’s in Finance. He has recently moved back to Rochester and is employed by Hy Vee in a management capacity.  The Ice Hawks are delighted to welcome Brett back to Rochester to begin his coaching career and are excited about what he will bring to the program
